Backpack Goodie Bag Pattern & Tutorial
I received several requests for my pattern after my Dora Backpack gift bags post awhile back. So here I am, finally delivering.
- 5/8″ grosgrain ribbon
- Coordinating thread/sewing machine
- Hot glue gun/glue sticks
- Straight pins
Trace the pattern pieces onto your felt and cut them out (one full pattern and one that is cut off at the dotted line). You’ll also need to cut out 2 strips of felt measuring 1.5″x3″ and one measuring 1.75″x17.5″.
Cut two 5-inch strips from your ribbon. Take your two strips of felt (1.5″x3″) and fold them in half. Draw a line down the center. Take your main backpack piece and fold the flap down. Pin the strips 3/4″ inch down, pinning through your middle line. Sew them down. On the bottom, pin your ribbon facing down 3/4″ from the bottom lined up with your strips of felt above. Sew.
Lift your ribbon up and pin them to the sewn-on strips just to keep them out of your way. Now take your longer strip (1.75″x17.5″) and pin from notch below flap around the bottom to the other notch. Sew using 1/4″ seam allowance.
Pin on the front of the bag using the same directions as above and sew. I fold the front in half to make sure it’s even and start the pinning process from the bottom middle and work my way up both sides.
Gather your side together and sew at an angle an inch down on both sides. This helps gather the sides of the bag in and gives it a better shape. Trim the excess.
Turn backpack right side out. Take the pins out holding the ribbon up. Fold your backpack strap strips together and cut each side at an angle. Using your hot glue gun, glue the ribbon in the center of each flap. Glue the top flap down encasing the ribbon.
The final bag measures approx. 6.5 x 7 inches, the perfect size for little hands. Of course, you could make it orange for Diego’s rescue pack, bling it out for a princess party, or write the party attendees’ names on the flap for some personalization. So many possibilities, really.
For this Dora backpack, I just made a simple pattern for the face using this template. I printed it out at a 5×7 size and it fits perfectly. I then just hot glue the pieces on.
They are a great size for party favors. If you make some of your own I’d love to see!
